I jumped into this, the first piece in the series, with both feet, or in this case with both hands.
Ringside at Richburg, by Andrew R. English, contains everything about the famous fight between John L. Sullivan and Jake Kilrain. Also, among the photos is one I had chosen to use (and abuse). The Ernest Marx photograph immediately drew me. However, it seemed to lack the action, brutality and emotion.
My approach to this painting would require a mattress to pin the canvas onto. I then proceeded to use a brush and my bare fists in a frenzied attempt to deliver blows, which the mattress absorbed.
