Throughout time there are many accounts of fisticuffs having been a source of crowd-pleasing entertainment. Prehistoric cave paintings depict ceremonial forms of challenge. Etruscans, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans are among those who have documented the evolution of this sport in paintings, sculpture etc.
Today, Bareknuckle fighting is more popular than ever. My body of work does not attempt to represent this. It’s not for a lack of appreciation.
I’m fascinated as much by the crowds who come to watch as I am the event itself, maybe more so. The expressions of viewers, who come to watch two individuals beat each other unmercifully, make for interesting depictions.
