This is the centerpiece of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park in Sprague Brook, NY. Dedicated Memorial Day, 2001.
The figure, which is larger than life, portrays a function that anyone who has served in the military can relate to — it depicts something peaceful, yet very necessary to survival. The GI is filling a canteen. This simple act of replenishment is essential to the sustenance of troops in combat.
Before work began, the block of mahogany granite weighed 7000 pounds; it now weighs less than half. Special thanks to Mike Gomez on this project.
